Best Book of 2024

My next favourite book of 2024 is Sorrow by @dawn_s_rodgers - it's self published, it's printed on a facsimile of her brother's school notebook, and it's about how an unreconciled grief at his early death inundates the coastal landscapes of Dorset, the thin places where the space between this world and others narrow.

It's a text image book, the most succinct but effective text image book of the year.

The words are not Dawn's words but those from her brother's death certificate. Dawn's words are embedded in her childhood, in the photograph of her with her brother, in the landscapes she connects to and is, like her brother, part of.

How much can be said with so few words.
